Green Deal and European independence: sustainability at the heart of the Union’s new strength

The Europe of the future is green, fair and independent.
This is the strong and clear message that will open the 2025 edition of the Buygreen Forum, in the inaugural conference entitled: ‘A strong Europe is the Europe of the Green Deal: competitive, respectful and independent’.

At a historical moment marked by environmental crises, geopolitical instability and profound economic transformations, the European Union has a clear path ahead of it: strengthening its competitiveness and resilience through sustainability. The European Green Deal is not just a set of environmental goals, but a true vision and cohesion project, embracing innovation, social justice, energy transition and collective well-being.

At the heart of the debate lies the strategic role of Green Public Procurement (GPP), the tool that turns vision into concrete action: sustainable procurement capable of guiding the market towards circular, inclusive and low-emission production models. Because a truly strong Europe is one that invests in the long term, protects natural resources, improves citizens’ quality of life and builds a fairer and more resilient economy.

The conference will address the major global challenges, but also explore the practical levers to tackle them: ambitious environmental criteria, innovative public policies and active engagement from the private sector. A shared reflection between institutions, businesses and civil society on how to turn the ambitions of the Green Deal into everyday reality – because sustainability is not a brake on development, but its only viable path.

Public Food as a Climate Lever: The Rome Model Cuts Emissions by Up to 33%

School meals can become a powerful tool for climate action. This is the key finding of an analysis carried out by Fondazione Ecosistemi in collaboration with the Climate Office of Rome Capital on the city’s new public school catering contract. By increasing plant-based menus, organic products and local supply chains, the Rome model is able to reduce emissions associated with school catering by up to 33%, while generating environmental, social and economic benefits.

Green procurement, sustainable school meals, circular economy and innovation: the Compraverde Buygreen Awards 2026 were presented in Rome during the event organised by Fondazione Ecosistemi. The 20th edition of Italy’s leading forum on sustainable public procurement concluded with the presentation of 25 recognitions, including awards, special mentions, the International Award and the Special +20 Awards dedicated to organisations that have contributed to two decades of Green Public Procurement in Italy.

More fruit and vegetables, plant-forward menus, less ultra-processed food and reduced food waste. But also greener public procurement and stronger local supply chains to transform school meals into a powerful tool for public health and environmental sustainability. This is the vision behind SchoolFood4Change, one of Europe’s largest initiatives exploring the links between nutrition, public health and environmental sustainability. The project involves almost 4,000 schools across 22 countries, reaches more than one million children and serves over 100 million school meals every year.
