Innovation and sustainability in road infrastructure: the new CAM and the prospects of rubberised asphalt

20 March 2025

Innovation also runs through asphalt. At the 2025 Compraverde Buygreen Forum, the spotlight is on the new ‘CAM strade’, the minimum environmental criterion that redefines the design, construction and maintenance of road infrastructure from a sustainable perspective. A long-awaited and strategic update, promoted by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, which paves the way – quite literally – for recycled materials, low-impact technologies and circular resource management models.

At the heart of the debate the opportunities of rubberised asphalt, a technical solution that uses recycled tyre materials (RTM) to create more durable, quiet and environmentally friendly road surfaces.

Leading the discussion will be ANAS, presenting its on-the-ground trials and the strategies implemented to comply with the new CAM requirements. A unique opportunity to learn about real experiences, technical data and results achieved on the national road network. A glance will then be turned to Europe, thanks to the contributions of the partners from the European project Re-Plan City Life, who will bring international testimonies on the use of RTM, highlighting benefits, obstacles overcome and future scaling opportunities.

The conference aims to foster practical dialogue among public bodies, engineers, researchers and companies, promoting a stronger culture of sustainability in public infrastructure and encouraging the widespread adoption of innovative, efficient, and circular construction practices.
A more sustainable road is no longer a utopia: it’s a reality being built today, through expertise, smart regulation, and materials that give waste a second life.
